Crime Fighters win prestigious award for city
The city centre crime reduction scheme “Liverpool Crime Alert” has won an award for the city which recognises Liverpool as a safe place to work, visit and shop. The Safer Business Award is the nationally recognised standard for Business Crime Reduction Partnerships (BCRPs) which shows that they are operating lawfully, in accordance with the Data Protection Act and with other good practice designed to promote effective partnership work.
On 7th November 2009 an assessment for the Safer Business Award was carried out by Action Against Business Crime (AABC) and the principal party providing the information was Tony Jopson, Partnership Manager. Action Against Business Crime was originally funded by the Home Office. It is now an independent not-for-profit organisation working with the Association of Chief Police Officers and other local statutory agencies and organisations. This includes working with business crime reduction partnerships, police, local authorities and other agencies to reduce crime effecting business in our towns, cities and shopping centres. The evaluation requires the partnership to produce evidence in relation to data management, performance, information, operations and any supplementary evidence to support partnership activity. The AABC audit looks at the partnership with regard to management structure, key performance indicators, operations, as well as protocols and evidence of success.
Particular attention is paid to the various aspects of handling personal and sensitive data. “Liverpool Crime Alert” current objectives include:
- To protect staff from acts of physical violence and abuse
- Reduce the incidents of crime for the benefit of staff and public
- To reduce antisocial behaviour and youth related crime.
- Reduce substance misuse by young people
- To exclude persistent thieves and trouble makers
- Improve the economic and general environment of the city, subsequently improving the prosperity within the area as well as help, protect and create employment
- Establishing greater economic investment by creating a safer place to work, visit & shop.
Steve Booth of AABC who carried out the assessment said, “Liverpool Crime Alert are an excellent example of partnership working and merit the pass with distinction. All the team at Liverpool Crime Alert Partnership are to be congratulated for their efforts.”
The award was presented to Constable Sheila Morrison the Business Crime Liaison Officer and the scheme manager Tony Jopson, at a ceremony in the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce. Sheila Morrison said, “The businesses in the city are united in crime prevention and reduction and have proved yet again that the sharing of intelligence and information can only lead to success.” Tony Jopson said, “Proactive engagement with the business sector and the introduction of proactive initiatives to reduce crime is what the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Merseyside Police are about, but it is our retail members in the city centre that deserve this award.”
